Nevada City live concert album release “Grief in Exile”
with Shelly Covert (Nisenan tribal spokeswoman)
It is with great excitement we invite you to join us at The Oustomah (“ustomah) Oddfellow’s Lodge in Nevada City, California,
for an evening of potent music and remembrance to celebrate the release of Mariee Sioux’s album ‘Grief in Exile’ and cultivate community indigenous awareness with a special welcome opening and songs from Shelly Covert, spokesperson for the Nevada City Rancheria Tribe.
This is going to be such a special evening open to the public and kid friendly
(be sure you children will be able to stay through 2 hrs quietly though please!)
As people arrive we are inviting attendees (and performers) to take part in a simple community alter building.
(NO REAL CANDLES ALLOWED, fake OK),
bringing flower(s) and or a small item
(that you can take home with you after) that represent some type of meaning to you on grief/love/& your ancestors if you feel called to.
Much of this evening will be about honoring our ancestors with remembrance and prayers to the original people of this area who once fully stewarded the land and still live here today. To reflect on who we are and where we come from though song and finally acknowledging we must welcome back the sacred medicine of grief back to our lives for the health of ourselves, our society and communities.
To start this evening off we will have Shelly Covert, Spokesperson for the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe, sharing a Nisenan welcome, information on the tribe and their current projects/community initiatives and sharing some songs as well!
It is such a great honor to have her with us on this evening as her female indigenous voice is one of the most important we can be listening to in our community at this time. There seems to be an awakening taking place with a surfacing desire for the true history to be honored and told about this area and to start supporting and spreading awareness of the importance of the Nisenan peoples continued existence. Their culture is experiencing a revival after being nearly lost due to what we glorify as the Gold Rush, we hope you’ll listen to her powerful message and song with open hearts and ears, thank you!
Closing out the evening Mariee Sioux will be performing her new record Grief in Exile in its entirety from start to finish with her backing ensemble, Gary Sobonya (on mandolin) & fellow songwriters/producers, Kacey Johansing and Tim Ramsey who helped record the album,
much of it actually IN Bolinas spring of 2018!
This will be a very special event held on the ancestral homelands of the Nisenan with their presence and wisdom and also the place where Mariee Sioux spent her whole life growing up. A few songs from the album were written or finished during her time in Nevada City and where a lot of her recent healing work has taken place.
We would love for you to join us in the magic of this evening!
